The Small Ships

North America's Waterways

Alaska

Lindbald Expeditions has been a leader in adventure travel since 1979. Their journeys are expeditions, not tours, consisting of small groups that always have a close, personal view of wildlife and cultural sites. Their itineraries are always well planned yet have the flexibility to take advantage of special opportunities. Their collaboration with National Geographic further enhances the shipboard presentations. The naturalists are what really distinguish Lindblad Expeditions. They staff the vesselswith experts in various disciplines to better enhance your appreciation of the area. They are noted for being personal and entertaining as well as knowledgeable. Daily programs are diverse to allow guests to participate at their own comfort level and evening recaps allow all to share experiences and learn. The eight-day Alaska’s Coastal Wilderness route operates May through August between Juneau and Sitka on the 62-guest National Geographic Sea Bird & Sea Lion.  12-day Alaska, British Columbia & San Juan Islands voyages between Seattle and Sitka are offered early May and September. Sightseeing and fees are included in cruise fare. Zodiac tours get you close to nature. Kayaks and hiking available.

American Safari Cruises offers discriminating travelers an inclusive yacht-cruise experience in Alaska’s Inside Passage with adventurous activities and exceptional amenities. An ASC yacht cruise provides an alternative to traditional large- and small-ship cruises by taking guests into areas that are not accessible to larger ships, and on excursions, and to activities that are exclusive, private, and unavailable to most other travelers. Yachts anchor every night in pristine coves or dockside in small villages so guests can explore by water and on foot. Daytime cruising to secluded coves, islands and seldom-visited areas yield unique opportunities to experience—by kayak, launch or on foot—a rich variety of wildlife and local cultures. With so few guests—3 of their 4 vessels carry 12 to 36 passengers—the itineraries are flexible and can be altered at a moment’s notice to maximize wildlife and scenic viewing opportunities. ASC yacht cruises are all-inclusive: shore excursions, activities, on-yacht meals and premium wines and liquors are included in the price of the cruise. All programs include two days in Glacier Bay. American Safari will introduce the Safari Endeavour (formerly Cruise West’s Spirit of Endeavour) in Southeast Alaska during the summer of 2012. A major renovation will transform the vessel into an upscale yacht-style ship with guest capacity reduced from 102 to 86. Discoverers’ Glacier Country is an eight-day round trip from Juneau, offered June through August on all vessels. Famed Inside Passage cruises, 15 days between Seattle and Juneau, are offered in May and September.

InnerSea Discoveries is a related brand to American Safari Cruises that aims to provide an “un-cruise” experience featuring daily active adventure excursions and a more modest price point. The Wilderness Explorer (former Spirit of Discovery of Cruise West) will join the InnerSea Discoveries fleet of small ship expedition vessels in Alaska in May 2012. A renovation will result in a 76-passenger vessel with amenities that will increase passenger comfort and make use of the latest technology. The new Northern Passages & Glacier Bay itinerary will be eight days between Juneau and Sitka and include three days exploring Glacier Bay National Park including hiking and kayaking expeditions. Two other vessels operate eight-day Inside Passage cruises: Eastern Coves from Juneau to Ketchikan; and Western Coves from Ketchikan to Juneau. These itineraries can be combined for a 15-day Ultimate Adventure, roundtrip Juneau. The season runs May through mid-September with 15-day voyages between Seattle and Juneau as the first and last cruises of the year.
