|
The 14-passenger Luciole is just over 100 feet in length and accommodations have been carefully planned to provide six double or twin-bedded cabins and two with single berths. Each cabin has its own private shower and toilet facilities. Her crew has always been outstanding and the cuisine fantastic! See more details in the PDF of the colorful brochure: Luciole_2008.pdf |

Inland Voyages is owned and managed by John and Penny Liley. John resigned as editor of a leading British yachting magazine in the early 1970s to undertake an epic barge journey from England, across the Channel to Calais and then throughout the French river and canal system. He has since written several books and articles on barging in Europe. Penny first worked as chef on the Luciole and her attention to detail results in the warm, welcoming atmosphere on board. The barge has been continually updated and improved for continued smooth running.

- a typical barge cruise itinerary (Itinerary is reversed every other week.) Sunday: The rendezvous at a Paris hotel with the Luciole representative is at 2:30 pm, followed by the journey to Auxerre in the barge's private bus. The Luciole herself is moored on the impressive river frontage in the city, overlooked by the Cathedral, Parish Church and the 13 - 15th Century Abbey. A Champagne reception welcomes guests on board. (See below for more information on the hotel.) Monday: A visit to the historic centre of Auxerre is followed by a cruise upriver into beautiful pastoral countryside where lunch is served on board. The afternoon's voyage, through sweeping reaches of the River Yonne, concludes at the wine-making centre of Bailly. Tuesday: A visit is made to a wine cave in the vicinity of Chablis. The picturesque villages of St Bris and Irancy stand nearby, and a rendezvous is made with wine producers in the area-followed by a visit to Chablis itself. After lunch, cruise up an arm of the canal to the small town of Vermenton. Wednesday: A morning drive in the bus takes the group up the valley of the tumbling River Cousin to the historic centre of Avallon, where a lively shopping area adjoins the ancient fortifications on the town's clifftop site. Following lunch Luciole continues southwards to a night-time mooring at the village of Mailly-la-Ville . Thursday: From Mailly, we make the short journey in the bus to Vezelay, where the spectacular 12th Century Basilica dominates the town. Here St Bernard preached the 2nd Crusade. After lunch Luciole cruises onwards through a region where dramatic cliffs stand by the waterside, to an evening mooring at the village of Lucy-sur-Yonne . Friday: Your final visit is to the imposing Chateau of Bazoches. Set on a hillside amidst splendid rolling countryside, this was the 17th Century home of the Marquis de Vauban, France 's great military engineer. The voyage in the afternoon, through the rich Nivernais landscape, takes you to the delightful Medieval town of Clamecy , a worthy venue for the climax of the cruise. Saturday: An after-breakfast departure for Paris anticipates arrival there around 1:00 pm. For guests wishing to travel elsewhere in France, by train or by hire car, a stop can always be made in Auxerre again on your journey up to Paris. 5, rue de Capucines, 75001 Paris Following a highly successful rendezvous partnership with the Hotel Mansart in 2007, Inland Voyages will be working with them again in 2008. The Hotel Mansart is located one street up from the Place Vendôme-near the Opéra Garnier and the department stores. The Hotel has attractive rates available for passengers who wish to extend their Luciole voyage with some time in Paris; ask your TravLtips Travel Consultant for further details when booking the Luciole. |
Luciole reaches the very heart of France. Each day the accompanying bus takes passengers on excursions into a historic and culturally rich region-to chateaux, market towns and vineyards. And the expert on-board guide knows this region well. There is no additional charge for the tours; all excursions and admissions are provided complimentary. The only extra cost is when optional balloon trips are arranged during the summer months.
Beautiful and historic, the Nivernais waterway on which the Luciole travels provides a step back in time. Embracing both river and man-made canal-built to older, smaller dimensions-it is now primarily a recreational route winding through scenic, rural countryside. Each curve in the route presents an exciting panorama, to be explored on a stroll between locks or from the sun deck of the Luciole. It is a lifestyle where hustle knows no place.
![]() The saloon has large windows, comfortable seating, tables and an interesting little reference library. A small but well-stocked bar is in the forward corner where passengers may help themselves at any time. (There is no charge for drinks or wine from the open bar.) For lunch and dinner, the saloon is converted into a dining room. The tables are placed together to form a long dining table which is attractively set including complimentary wine. |
|
![]() The front half of the Luciole is a carpeted observation deck outfitted with outdoor chairs, tables and a fleet of bicycles. It is a great vantage point for watching the lock operations and relaxing as you float through the peaceful countryside of Burgundy. Passengers can easily hop off and on the barge anytime it enters a lock. Since the Luciole is of the maximum dimensions for these waterways, you are never more than a foot from the lock wall. |
